Children who are experiencing homelessness may attend school in Farmington

The Board will provide school accommodations to children who are homeless within the meaning of the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. The McKinney-Vento law grants the right to attend school to children and youth experiencing homelessness, including “unaccompanied youth” who are not in the custody of a parent or guardian.  Under the McKinney-Vento law, homeless children and youth include children and youth who:

  • Lack a fixed, adequate, regular nighttime residence, including children and youth who share the housing of others due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reasons.
  • Have a nighttime residence that is a public or private palce not designed or used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings (e.g. cars, public spaces, parks, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations).
  • Live in temporary housing, such as a shelter or a motel, or are abandoned in hospitals.,

Children experiencing homelessness need not establish residency.

If a parent or child (if unaccompanied) believes that the child may meet the definition of “homeless” please contact our liaison for homelessness:

Information for families looking to home school students.

The Farmington Board of Education recognizes the right of parents or legal guardians to educate their child(ren) at home. Parents wishing to home school are required to file, annually, with the  Superintendent of Schools, a Notice of Intent form which provides basic information about the  program to be provided. By filing this Notice of Intent, the parents acknowledge full  responsibility for the education of their child(ren) in accordance with the requirement of state  law. Receipt of this Notice of Intent in no way constitutes approval by the school district of the  content or effectiveness of a home instruction program.

Children educated at home are considered to be nonpublic school students and are not part of the  system’s educational responsibility. The school system, therefore, does not have the same  obligation under the law to provide services, including special education and related services, to  children who are being home schooled. Additionally, home schooled students, as any other  students who are not enrolled in the Farmington Public Schools, will not be allowed to  participate in extracurricular activities.

For detailed information about homeschooling, please refer to Board Policy 6172.3
