This course encompasses classroom and physical activity experiences with the emphasis on team-building and group process through competitive and cooperative activities both in the gym and the classroom. Students will also explore the process of personal improvement and behavior change as they complete an authentic behavior change over 4 weeks. Personal health topics covered include sleep, movement, and nutrition and how they can be optimized for total wellness. Successful completion fulfills the graduation requirement of Personal Wellness 11. Enrollment is on a space available basis. A minimum of 10 students is required to run this course. (Students will need clothes for physical activity each day (there will be time and locker room access to change) This is a class for FARMINGTON High School students ONLY!

Transition for Success

The purpose of the Transition for Success course is to assist students in developing the tools necessary for positive academic, behavioral, and social/emotional success at Farmington High School. Students will engage in activities to jump start their freshman year. They will learn about motivation and growth mind-set, and they will set goals and organize themselves for a successful launch into 9th grade. Students will receive personalized instruction on the supports available to them as students at FHS, including training on using the technologies utilized by FHS faculty and staff as tools for learning. Enrollment is on a space-available basis and open to any incoming FARMINGTON High School 9th grade student ONLY!

Students will continue to grow musically and develop life-long musicianship skills through collaborative and independent study in warm ups, performance, improvisation, rhythm, chamber work, solo repertoire, as well as sight-reading skill builders. Students will also be able to start rehearsing the Northern Region Festival audition music at camp. NO BEGINNERS! Students must currently be studying band instruments in order to register. This program will focus on team building, positive leadership, and making smart decisions. The academy will also center around refining art skills in a variety of media. Students will create a painted batik tote bag, acrylic painting with alternative painting techniques, or a nail and string design art piece. Participation in a one-on-one critique process with the instructor will help to improve each student's overall work so he/she can come away from the academy with an art piece. This program is designed for advanced orchestra students and includes an hour of orchestra, quartet, rehearsal and art instruction daily. Students accepted into this program are placed in chamber music groups and an orchestra and are coached by our staff of professional musicians. Together they will prepare and present their selected chamber music projects in a concert at the end of the 3 week course. Students will also direct their creative energies in developing individual art projects under the guidance of a professional artist. They will explore the comparison of art and music as a means of expressing similar ideas and will be encouraged to draw from other cross-disciplinary interests as they research and develop their projects. Through this program, students will continue to develop as self-directed learners, critical thinkers, communicators and problem solvers. Students should bring their instrument, music books, a snack and a water bottle. Led by Farmington Public Schools music teacher Carl Shugart. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JUNE 7th!

Students will make their own dinner/tasty snacks using ingredients from the food group of the day. They will learn the basics of healthy eating with a hands-on approach. This class is nut free! Students will come home with new recipes, new skills, and new knowledge about the food that they eat. Students should bring a water bottle. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JUNE 7th!

          Taught by an American Red Cross instructor, this course will prepare boys and girls to be responsible babysitters. Topics include supervision of children, accident prevention, first aid, caring and feeding of infants and children, and what to do in an emergency. Course fee includes American Red Cross babysitter training book and a certificate which is mailed out within a month of successful completion of the course (student attendance is mandatory to receive a certificate).

            Multicultural Arts & Technology Summer Program

            Instructional activities include a field trip to the New Britain Museum of American Art; drawing, painting, puppetry, media technology and mural production; performing arts - theatre, dance, African drumming, Chinese instrumental music; writing and technology - creating and illustrating a story about one's self, family and friends; study of art from diverse cultures; mentoring opportunities for teens at program sites including Camp Courant; demonstrations by professional artists, performers and writers.             Museum Arts Summer Program @ NBMMA

            The Museum Arts Summer Program, being held at the New Britain Museum of American Art, will include activities in drawing, painting, performing arts, creative writing, and book illustration. These activities are based on the museum collection and are team taught by certified teachers, museum instructors, professional artists and performers. A field trip to the Hill-Stead Museum is included.

            Parents are invited to the museum to view the collection and share in their child's experience on August 3rd from 3:30-5 PM.

            There is no cost! This is a FREE gram funded through a grant from the CT State Dept of Education providing art supplies, the use of instruments and snacks (free of peanut products).

            HILL-STEAD MUSEUM

            Summer On the Hill

            Play Like the Popes! Hill-Stead was once home to a private, six-hole golf course, which is highlighted in a special exhibition this summer. Children will visit the new exhibition Diamonds in the Rough: Golfing at Hill-Stead and then they’ll get to putt with “hickory sticks” like the ones that were used in the early 1900’s. They will also play croquet, lawn tennis, board games and other fun pastimes that children enjoyed when Hill-Stead was home to the Pope family.

            Experience Art! Paintings, pastels, sculpture, prints and more adorn the walls at Hill-Stead. Each day includes an exploration of the techniques and creativity needed to produce art in the style of Hill-Stead’s collections. In addition to daily projects, each child will use oil pastels to create an Impressionist-style work of art over the course of the week.
