Students will continue to grow musically and develop life-long musicianship skills through collaborative and independent study in warm ups, performance, improvisation, rhythm, chamber work, solo repertoire, as well as sight-reading skill builders. Students will also be able to start rehearsing the Northern Region Festival audition music. NO BEGINNERS! Students must currently be studying band instruments in order to register. Students should bring their instrument, music books, a snack and a water bottle. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JUNE 7th!

Concert will be held at West Woods Upper Elementary School on Wednesday, July 3rd at 10:30 AM in the gym.

Motion, Balance & Creativity Academy (students entering gr. 2-4 and 5-7)

This academy is a fun and exciting mix of Art and Physical Education. The Art portion of the academy will center around refining art skills through painting. Students will create one or more paintings throughout the program. Participation in a one-on-one critique process with the instructor will help to improve each student’s overall work so he/she can come away from the academy with an art piece. The Physical Education portion will focus on games and activities that foster team building, positive leadership, and critical thinking skills. The students will engage in new activities each day. Students should bring a snack and a water bottle. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JUNE 7th!

Suzuki String Academy (students entering gr. 3-10)

The Farmington Public Schools Orchestra Teachers and members of the Hartford Symphony invite you to join them for 3 weeks of intensive music making and fun!

Daily classes include mini lessons on your stringed instrument, note-reading and group class, orchestra, chorus, and visual arts. Advanced players may also have chamber music opportunities. Suzuki Strings Academy is designed for students with at least 1 year of instruction, no beginners please! Students should bring their instrument, music books, a healthy lunch, and a water bottle.

The Full Day Program is offered to students enrolled in the morning program who would like to continue into the afternoon. Students will receive more instruction on their stringed instrument and work on extended visual arts projects. There will also be time for basketball, four square, and other outdoors games. Students should bring a snack in addition to their lunch. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JUNE 7th!

Concerts will be held at West Woods Upper Elementary School as follows:

  • Chamber Music: July 30 from 7 PM to 8:30 PM in the cafetorium (doors open at 6:30 PM)

Open to students entering grades 7-12 per Teacher Recommendation - Designed for advanced orchestra students, students accepted into this program are placed in chamber music groups and an orchestra and are coached by our staff of professional musicians. Together students will prepare and present their selected chamber music projects in a concert at the end of the academy. They will also direct their creative energies in developing individual art projects under the guidance of a professional artist. Students will explore the comparison of art and music as a means of expressing similar ideas and will be encouraged to draw from other cross-disciplinary interests as they research and develop their projects. Through this program, students will continue to develop as self-directed learners, critical thinkers, communicators and problem solvers. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JUNE 7th!

Chamber Music Concert will be held at West Woods Upper Elementary School on Wednesday, July 31st from 7 PM to 9 PM in the cafetorium.

Musical Theatre Academy - Beauty and the Beast Jr. (students entering gr. 2-8)

Students will engage in the process of bringing a story from the written page to the stage, the magic of musical theatre, and the joy of developing a character for the stage. Students will be involved in prop construction, theatre games, movement, voice exercises, rehearsing and performing Beauty and the Beast Jr.. Auditions will take place on the first day. All students must be available to perform in the final production on Friday, August 2nd. Students should bring a water bottle and a snack each day. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JUNE 7th!

Students will explore the five food groups in MyPlate! Each class will focus on one food group, starting off with an interactive nutrition activity followed by a hands-on cooking activity.       A celebration of creative problem-solving and empowerment, YHA Team Elektra all-girls leadership program explores how the combination of digital tools and creative expression can make a difference in the local and global community. As a new design start-up, Team Elektra members are tasked with raising awareness about the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Using cloud-based software, team members create websites with informational graphics and videos that communicate to the world who we are and the positive change that we seek. Each day, the program addresses important themes relevant to being a healthy adolescent, like identity, self-respect, and connectedness. Unleashing confidence and life skills in a week full of creativity, design, color, and fun, YHA Team Elektra prepares today’s generation of middle school girls to become inspirational leaders of tomorrow.         July 8-12 - You will be introduced to Python, one of the most popular coding languages today. Start slowly or code fast, no Python experience necessary. For intermediate coders.

        Pi Jam (students ages 10+)
        July 15-19 - Jam to the coolest credit card sized gadget, the Raspberry Pi3. Explore stuff you can do with a tiny computer, which may include using light sensors, Python with Minecraft or much more! For intermediate coders.

        Girls are Awesome (students ages 7-10)
        July 22-26 - Girls ONLY - Use Scratch or Snap! to explore coding in a fun, supportive and friendly environment. For newbie and novice coders.

        Mobile Madness (students ages 10+)
        July 29 - Aug 2 - Get introduced to the world of mobile app development by coding mobile apps loaded on an Android-based mobile phone. Receive a basic Android phone to keep. For intermediate coders.

        Rise of the Machines (students ages 10+)
        Aug 5-9 - Learn about Artificial Intelligence use cases and dive into some fundamental algorithms and create some basic AI apps as well. For intermediate coders.

        Games are Awesome B (students ages 7-10)
        Aug 12-16 - Use drag n’ drop languages like Scratch or Snap to create some awesome new and classic games! For newbie and novice coders. Content is different from (A).

        Make it Go with Robots (students ages 10+)
        Aug 19-23 - Build and program a variety of small robots through hands-on projects that will culminate in a demo at the end of the week. For intermediate coders.

        At Home with Art @ The Hill-Stead Museum (students aged 7-11)

        Each day’s activities begin with a visit to the historic rooms to gather inspiration and learn about artistic techniques from the exceptional architecture and the extraordinary collection of paintings, pastels, sculpture, prints and ceramics. Afterward, students will experiment with hands-on creativity while applying what they have learned to their own works of art with the help of experienced educators.         BABYSITTING & CHILD SAFETY COURSES

        Babysitting Basics (students aged 11-15)

        Taught by an American Red Cross instructor, this course will prepare boys and girls to be responsible babysitters. Topics include supervision of children, accident prevention, first aid, caring and feeding of infants and children, and what to do in an emergency. Most importantly, your new knowledge and skills will make you a more confident babysitter - which is sure to be good for your business. Course fee includes American Red Cross babysitter training book and a certificate which is mailed out within a month of successful completion of the course (student attendance is mandatory to receive a certificate).

          CULTURAL ARTS PROGRAMS

          Arts & Technology Summer Program (students entering gr. 1-9)

          This program offers opportunities for students to experience visual arts activities using cutting-edge technology (industry standard digital art and design software such as virtual reality and digital animation) as well as activities such as drawing, painting, ceramics, music dance, theatre and writing all taught by certified teachers and professional artists and performers. Students will also visit the Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington. Parents are invited to share in their child’s experience during a closing ceremony presentation on August 2 from 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM at the Farmington High School.           The program is funded through a grant from the CT State Department of Education and is offered pending receipt of grant funding!

          Sponsored by the Consolidated School District of New Britain in collaboration with the Farmington, Hartford and Plainville Public Schools, this program offers students the opportunity to participate in activities such as drawing, painting, performing arts, creative writing, and book illustration based on the New Britain Museum of American Art collection. All activities are taught by certified teachers, museum instructors, professional artists and performers. Parents are invited to view the museum collection and share in their child’s experience on August 2 from 3:30PM - 5PM at the New Britain Museum of American Art. Students should bring a water bottle - lunch will be provided! REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JUNE 21st!
