Band Academy

Band Academy students will continue to grow musically and develop life-long musicianship skills through collaborative and independent study in warm ups, performance, improvisation, rhythm, chamber work, solo repertoire, as well as sight-reading skill builders. Students will also be able to start rehearsing the Northern Region Festival audition music at camp. Concerts will be held at the conclusion of the Academy. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JUNE 23rd!

NO BEGINNERS! Students must currently studying band instruments in order to register. This academy is led by Farmington music teacher Dawn Matthews.

Join our stringed-instrument music community consisting of the Farmington Public Schools string faculty, general music teachers, and area string teachers for an exciting three weeks of great music making, string instruction, and visual arts classes. Students should bring a water bottle, a healthy lunch, instrument, suzuki book(s), extra set of string, and rosin. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JUNE 23rd!

Students will take classes in acting, voice, and dance and rehearse for the musical theatre production “Seussical.” Auditions will take place on the first day of camp. All students must be available to perform in the production of this musical on the evening of Friday, July 28th. This program is led by Farmington Public Schools music teacher Catherine Sullivan. Art Camp by Art-ventures for Kids

ART-ventures for Kids, provides art-filled weeks are designed around exciting themes. We help children make the connection between art and the amazing world around us! We believe the best route to expanding one’s creativity is through exploring and experimenting with as many art forms, tools and techniques as possible. As a result, our art camps expose children to a world of artistic wonder while we encourage their own original ideas and their own unique perception and interpretation of art.

TREASURE ISLAND AND ENCHANTED KINGDOM: Pirate and Princess art-venturers sail the high seas and discover enchanted kingdoms while creating fantastical masterpieces. Get into character, donning handcrafted pirate swords and flags or princess hats and fluttering wings. Make your own stenciled t-shirts, create magical self-portraits, and build super cool castles. Paint note holder frogs—perhaps they'll turn into princes! Finally, draw treasure maps, design wooden rowboats, and set out on a hunt for buried treasure. Then create gem-studded chests to hide the riches! Pirates and Princesses explore clay art, painting, beading, stained glass, fabric art, and more. Humorous storytelling is included, as well as FACE PAINTING OR GLITTER TATTOOS. All in all, a fun and fantasy-filled week of creative art activities the kids will love to do!

AMAZING FACES AND PLACES: Oh, the places we'll go! Art explorers travel to some pretty weird places while creating some wicked cool art forms dating back to when art began. Discover weird gargoyle faces and visit the amazing Taj Mahal. Experience cave painting, fossil making and egg shell mosaics. Make worry dolls and totem poles. Learn about Oaxacan alebrijes while designing T-shirts. Sculpt and paint colorful Mexican pots, make bark paintings and create Haitian sequined banners. Fun facts and concepts in history and geography are included as well FACE PAINTING or GLITTER TATTOOS. This is our most creative and original art-venture week!

Agent Training by Young Hacks Academy

Does your child have what it takes to lead in the 21st century? Young Hacks Academy is a summer camp that uses technology to develop real-world leadership skills. Blending computer programming, problem-solving, and teamwork, YHA teaches kids to build cool video games about big challenges facing the world today, such as climate change, homelessness, and endangered wildlife. As serious as we are about exploring technology, YHA is also committed to having fun away from the screen, moving campers outside each day for unplugged games like treasure hunts and riddle relays. AGENT TRAINING: Whether it’s public speaking or collaborating with peers, YHA Agent Training models essential leadership techniques that will immediately help students in and out of the classroom. Agents tackle daily missions using Scratch, a user-friendly, visual programming tool that empowers students to quickly start developing their own video games and interactive stories. The challenge is to come up with a project that will not only entertain their friends, but also teach something about important topics that are impacting our local and global community.

    THRIVE Movement Academy - Capoeira, Circus & Aerial Arts

    Students will be introduced to the physical aspects of circus - Chinese yo-yo, spinning plates, devil stick, juggling, unicycle balance, and rola bola. Coordination and focus will be exercised as well as character and performance skills. Students will also learn the Afro-Brazilian art form of Capoeira which combines physical acrobatics, martial arts, dance, music (drumming and singing) and philosophical elements. In a typical Capoeira class students learn the fundamentals of all these aspects.

    Have you ever heard the saying, "one man's trash is another man's treasure?" In this half-day camp, you will do just that! Students will use their imagination and creativity to build a new structure each day that will solve problems using trash, such as building an airplane that can hold the most quarters using paper towel rolls, paper clips, paper, tape, etc. And, if your initial structure doesn't succeed at solving the problem, go back and modify it!!!!

    IncrediFlix Summer programs are all about the fun and excitement of making movies! Children will work in age appropriate groups and go through all the steps that Hollywood producers go through from "Action" to "That's a Wrap!" Programs focus on creativity, cooperation, and fun, fun, fun! Your child will be a real filmmaker and will have a movie they created to prove it.

    LIVE ACTION FLIX: Do you want to have a blast making a movie? You don't have to be an actor to star in these movies that you make from "Action" to "That's a wrap." We'll guide you through the Hollywood process as you brainstorm, location scout, bring in props and costumes, act and direct in a collaborative movie that will be fun for the entire audience. *All flix downloadable within a month after camp ends.

    LEGO FLIX: We know you love LEGO's and can create incredible LEGO worlds, now it s time to bring those worlds to life in LEGO stop-motion animated flix! We provide the LEGOs, and you provide your imagination. Students will create a LEGO set with LEGO characters for a movie they storyboard, write, shoot, and voice-over in age-appropriate groups. *All flix downloadable within a month after camp ends.

    FIRST LEGO League Summer Challenge

    Tomorrow’s innovators practice imaginative thinking and teamwork and designed to introduce STEM concepts while exciting them through a brand they know and love - LEGO®. All skill levels are welcomed and needed, technical or non-technical.

    JR. LEAGUE CHALLENGE: Students will have the opportunity to work as a team to complete a challenge with a FIRST LEGO Jr. League kit while learning to code. Students will learn how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math impact our everyday lives while they get excited about future innovations. In an effort to redefine learning, teams will learn about simple machines as they build a model made of LEGO® elements with a motorized part and learn to present information based on what they've learned. This is a true 21st century learning experience your child surely will not want to miss!

    ROBOT CHALLENGE: Students will have the opportunity to work as a team to build and program a FIRST LEGO League robot. Teams will also explore how we interact with the animals we live among as they research and solve a real world problem. Students will learn how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math impact our everyday lives while they get excited about future innovations.     Mad Science is a leading science enrichment provider. We deliver unique, hands-on science experiences for children that are as entertaining as they are educational.

    SECRET AGENT LAB: Develop your special agent and detective skill in this super hands-on week of fun! Uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis. Sharpen your secret agent skills and discover how chemistry and the science of forensics can come to the aid of a secret agent. Identify and collect evidence – from fingerprints to tracks to trash! Secret agents-in-training will use science and awesome technological tools to connect the dots and help sniff out the suspects in this investigation into the science of sleuthing.

    ROCKIN' ROCKETS: Children will step into the shoes of a rocket scientist and learn the fundamentals of flight, propulsion and rocket design. We’ll have fun exploring astronomy and trying out various flight designs from hot air balloons to hovercrafts (and many more!). “Launch Day” will bring some real excitement to your budding astronaut! Kids will build rockets as well as discover the fundamental concepts involved in launching and recovering many different types of rockets.     We hope you can join us at our Preschool Summer Camp and K-Readiness Program located at Noah Wallace Elementary School. We use the State of CT Preschool Framework which closely aligns with the Common Core as a basis for our curriculum and focus on cognitive, personal, social, creative, and physical development. Onsite entertainment is provided on a weekly basis. Outside water fun including an inflatable waterslide is available! Campers will also enjoy weekly themed events. Snacks are provided daily, and, along with entertainment, are included in the tuition. ALL participants must be toilet-trained.

    Farmington Extended Care and Learning will be offering a 3-day and 5-day Summer Camp at West Woods Upper Elementary School. Campers can look forward to a field trip and swimming activities each week. For students entering grades 1-7 and are Farmington RESIDENTS ONLY!

    The LIT program is designed to give an opportunity for students going into 8th grade to learn the importance of communication, decision-making and conflict resolution. Using the mission of EXCL, the students will get the chance to be part of a group that will participate in hands-on leadership activities. The program is designed to teach leadership skills that will benefit the student at home, school, and in the community.

    Multicultural Arts Summer Program

    July 17 - August 1, 2017

    Students entering grades 2 - 12

    Instructional activities include a field trip to the New Britain Museum of American Art; drawing, painting, puppetry, media technology and mural production; performing arts - theatre, dance, African drumming, Chinese instrumental music; writing and technology - creating and illustrating a story about one's self, family and friends; study of art from diverse cultures; mentoring opportunities for teens at program sites including Camp Courant; demonstrations by professional artists, performers and writers. The program is funded through grants from CT State Dept of Education and sponsored by Farmington, its public school partners Hartford, New Britain and Plainville in cooperation with local museums and universities.

    Chinese Language School Youth Summer Camp

    This program is offered through a partnership with Farmington Public Schools and the Chinese Language School of Greater Hartford. A structured, fun-filled 5-day program with traditional Chinese cultural activities including Chinese Folk Dance, Folk Games, Music, Calligraphy, Arts & Crafts, and Cooking! Lunch and snacks are included. Students 6 years old by December 31, 2017 and up are eligible.

    Come join CHARLIE BUTTERFIELD (Farmington HS Tennis Coach) and MAX VIVIAN (Newington HS Tennis Coach) for a great workout for a fun lifelong sport regardless of skill level along with other experienced staff. Whether you are a beginner or a more accomplished player, tennis camp is for you! All lessons are designed with the players ability level in mind. Fitness, stroke development, game play, court movement, and match strategy are are among some of the focus areas. Racquet and equipment are provided IF needed.
