An Introduction to the Farmington Public Schools’
Strategic Intervention Model

Why have an intervention model?

The Farmington Public School System is committed to helping ALL students attain high
levels of academic achievement. A clearly articulated intervention program is needed to
support students in this endeavor. With the 2004 reauthorization of the federal IDEA
(Individuals with Disabilities Education) Act, we have the opportunity to systematically
and thoughtfully integrate an intervention model with the process of identifying students
with learning disabilities. A systematic approach to intervention will allow us to monitor
the progress of all students, provide a multi-tiered support system for those who do not
make significant progress, and funnel valuable resources to where they are most needed.

What are the Farmington beliefs and practices that drive this intervention model?

- A central focus on student outcomes and efficacy principles

- Core general education curriculum and research-based instruction responsive to
student needs

- Identification and intervention at the earliest sign of difficulty

- Collaborative teams that use data to make decisions about instruction

- Common assessments that allow teachers to monitor student progress

- Support structures for social emotional learning and behavioral supports

What are the key components of Farmington’s intervention model that align with
the CT State Dept. of Education framework for SRBI (Scientific Research-Based

- Universal Screening

- Multi-tiered Research-Based Interventions
