National History Day

Happy New Year to the History Day Team!
We will be meeting three times this month.  Please mark your planners that we will meet after school on Jan 16, Jan. 23, and Jan. 31. This will be time for you to do research and get feedback on work that you have already completed. We will also work on thesis statements.
I have set up a History Day drop box in NoodleTools if anyone wants feedback on the sources you have used so far.  I can also give you feedback on your annotations. Remember, you need to annotate all sources for the History day competition. You should be using both primary and secondary sources.

The registration deadline of Jan 29 is fast approaching.  Most of you still need to go online and complete the process. Please see  12-12 memo in the Notice resources below.   Your parents will also need to verify that you have permission to register.  Please see me sometime next week if you are having trouble registering.  I also need the name of your project to complete the teacher portion of the registration. You may send that to me via email. You may come after school on Monday, Wednesday,  Friday, or ask for a pass to come in during lunch if you need help with registration.
As we are getting closer to the competition, please check your email frequently for updates!

December 2013

Topics and Research At this point you should all be settled on a topic connected to the theme of Rights and Responsibilities. You should set up a project in NoodleTools and keep track of all of your sources. If you are working with a partner you may share your project in NoodleTools so that you both may enter sources.

You should also begin your research.  You may take your notes on note-sheets or in NoodleTools notes. Vacation week is a great time to visit historical societies and libraries or spend some time finding online sources.  You should have a significant portion of your research completed by the next meeting when we will work on thesis statements.

Registration The deadline for registration is Jan 29. Mrs. Molloy has set up a preliminary registration for you but she cannot complete it until she has the title of your project.  You should email that to her once it is decided. You should go to http://ct.nhd.org/DistrictContests.htm and click on contests.  Register for the 2014 Torrington Contest on March 29. There is a section that must be reviewed by your parents before the registration is complete.

MeetingsWe will be meeting more frequently after the holiday break.  We will meet on Thursdays after school on the following days in January: 16th 23rd and 30th. We will work on thesis statements at the next meeting, which is why it is important that you have a significant portion of your research complete.

WorkshopsAs previously mentioned, there are worthwhile workshops that will help you create your project.  The next one is on Jan. 11 in Torrington.  There will also be one in Hartford on Jan 18. Visit http://ct.nhd.org/Workshops.htm for more information.  You will need to provide your own transportation to these workshops.

Questions Even though we are not meeting until Jan 16, you may come after school to work, if you make arrangements to meet with Mr. Molloy or Mr. Guignino. You may also email us with any questions.

 Happy Researching!
