Tom Johnston

Tom Johnston received his Bachelor’s degree in saxophone performance and music education from the Hartt School of Music. He has a Master’s degree in music education from Central Connecticut State University and a Master’s degree in educational technology from the University of Hartford. Since 1985, Tom has been director of bands at Farmington High School. The band program has grown under his direction from 60 members to over 200 members in four bands. He works daily with a concert band, a symphonic band and a wind ensemble. Tom began a percussion class five years ago, which is now taught by a percussion specialist. He also directs the marching band and the jazz band.

Tom’s ensembles have won competitions in many festivals all over the United States and Canada. Travel experiences include San Diego, San Antonio, Atlanta, Orlando, Boston, Washington, Toronto and Montreal. He has also toured England, Scotland and most recently, Ireland.

Tom has conducted many festival bands and jazz bands during his tenure at Farmington High School. He is an active member of the Connecticut Music Educator’s Association, the International Association of Jazz Educator’s, the National Band Association, the Music Educator’s National Conference and the Phi Beta Mu band director’s honor society.

This year, Tom is the audition chair of jazz for the Northern Regional Music festival in Connecticut and is chair of the All State Jazz Band.
