Press Release – FHS Student is recipient of prestigious award

FARMINGTON HIGH SCHOOL – DOORVA GARG NAMED RECIPIENT OF THE STAND UP FOR STEM NEXT GENERATION ROLE MODEL AWARD

Doorva Garg, a senior at Farmington High School, has been awarded the prestigious Stand Up for STEM Next Generation Role Model Award by the Connecticut chapter of the Million Women Mentors organization. Dr. Colleen Bielitz, the state leader of the Million Women Mentors CT Chapter, presented Doorva with the award at a ceremony at SCSU, with CT Commissioner of Education Charlene Russell-Tucker and Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz in attendance. The Stand Up for STEM Next Generation Role Model Award recognizes a young mentor 16 -21 years older who demonstrates a passion for STEM and associated careers, participates in STEM curriculum and encourages others to develop STEM skills and capabilities, embraces available STEM activities, and demonstrates leadership in these activities.

Doorva has led students in advocating for opportunity and equity in Computing and STEM at FHS. She has used her many leadership roles at FHS to encourage other young women to pursue STEM through taking courses and joining teams and clubs. FHS Computer Science teacher Tim Barron proudly wrote in her nomination that “Doorva often operates outside her comfort zone and always encourages others to “come along” with her. She is a remarkable CS student who sees the people “behind the code” and recognizes the power of collaboration and diversity in thought among problem solvers.”

Doorva led a group of high school students in teaching Scratch programming after school to 5th and 6th grade the last two years. She mentored a cohort of other high school CS students (10 girls last year & 4 this year) who are her co-teachers and ready to take over next year. Additionally, Doorva has been an inspirational student leader on Farmington’s FIRST Robotics Team 178 as the team’s Director of Community Outreach. FHS Science department leader Jacky Paton has recently asked Doorva to serve as an alumna on our new Computer Science advisory board next year. Her impact will continue at FHS for years to come! Congratulations, and thank you to Doorva Garg!
